Katie Hunzinger and Ashley Booth Share a Love for the Community Through Volunteering

After moving to Cheltenham and seeing the recruitment signs for volunteer firefighters, Katie Hunzinger submitted an application to volunteer at Elkins Park Fire Company.  Shortly after, Katie’s wife of three years, Ashley Booth, submitted her own application.

“My grandfather served as a firefighter for Philadelphia and I work for the Girl Scouts full-time, so volunteering is ingrained in my day-to-day life,” said Ashley. “I think it’s incredibly important to give back to the community.”

In addition to her full-time career, Ashley is currently pursuing her EdD, while Katie is a PhD-trained exercise science professor who also works clinically in cardiac rehab.

“We try to balance it as best as we can,” said Katie. “Sometimes, if we’re both working from home when a call comes in, we quickly decide who is able to respond.”

The duo attended the Montgomery County Fire Academy together to earn their Firefighter I certifications.

“The classes were long, but it was nice to spend that time together and learn new skills, like how to safely enter a building on a fire call,” said Ashley.

As the only active female firefighters at the station, they provide a unique perspective, but they emphasize how welcomed they feel by the crew.

“There are people from all different backgrounds at the fire company, and we all bring different skill sets to the table,” said Katie. “Ashley is incredibly logical and always brings a level head to the station.”

Ashley added, “Katie is very passionate and constantly advocates for the people around her.”
